CONFESSIONS OVER COFFEE: THE COUNTER EXPLORES HUMAN CONNECTION
CAFETERIA REVIEWS THE LATEST PLAY AT THEATERWORKS HARTFORD
The counter at your favorite diner is a sacred place, serving coffee, connection and conversation.
At TheaterWorks, the counter becomes a confessional as a waitress and her favorite early morning diner forge an unlikely friendship. Written by Meghan Kennedy, The Counter illuminates deceivingly mundane interactions, proving that everyone has a story if you’re willing to listen. Starring Tim DeKay as Paul, the insomniac regular and Justis Bolding as Katie, the sharp yet kind waitress, The Counter is a captivating reminder of the value of connection. When Paul asks Katie for a favor she wants nothing more to refuse, the conversations at the counter shift from lighthearted banter to souI-searching secrets. In an increasingly lonely and disconnected world, the counter at a rundown diner becomes a third space and a lifeline for Katie and Paul, revealing the depth of life’s daily rhythms with just a single cup of coffee. The cast also includes Erika Rolfsrud, who made an appearance in Good People at TheaterWorks Hartford. It is also worth nothing that Justis Bolding is a member of TheaterWorks’ Board of Directors, but is now making her debut on stage.
The Counter marks TheaterWorks’ 40th anniversary season, commemorating the arts organization’s rich tradition of bringing world-class productions to Hartford. “We’re thrilled to continue celebrating our 40th Anniversary season with The Counter — a play that feels unmistakably ‘TWH,’ TheaterWorks’ Artistic Director Rob Ruggiero shares. “It embodies all the qualities our audiences have cherished over the past four decades: authenticity, heart, simplicity, and just enough surprise to keep you leaning in.”
Showing now until March 22, tickets are priced at $25 - $70 (fees not included). All tickets can be purchased online at twhartford.org or by calling the box office at 860.527.7838.
