It could be the end of an era as the beloved Connecticut Sun is set to relocate to Boston in 2027 as the WBNA team has been purchased by a Celtics-led ownership group for over $300 million.
“I’ve been pushing for years for Boston to get a WNBA team; I think it would be great for Boston. I also think it would be great for the Connecticut Sun to move to Boston and represent all of New England. We are the hub of New England and the place that basketball was invented. I think it makes a lot of sense,” Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey shared with The Boston Globe.
Whether or not Boston is truly “the hub of New England,” the pending sale puts Connecticut at a disadvantage. The deal isn’t official yet as it still needs to be approved by the WBNA’s Board of Governors, but if brought to fruition, could be devastating as the WBNA team has undoubtedly sparked a resurgence of interest in the Nutmeg State and our sports teams. The WBNA has finally been getting the long over-due credit it deserves as players like Marina Mabrey and Aneesah Morrow have been making their mark on the court.
This potential switch up will mark the Sun’s second relocation as the team initially made its way to the roster as the Orlando Miracles in 1999 and later moved to Connecticut in 2002. Since then, the Connecticut Sun have reached four WNBA finals.
