CONNECTICUT BALLET CELEBRATES FEMALE ARTISTRY WITH “INSPIRING WOMEN”
Turning the spotlight on female choreographers.
Female choreographers are finally getting their time on stage as Connecticut Ballet shines a light on four amazing female choreographers with Inspiring Women, an program of works exclusively commissioned for the Ballet.
“It’s a statistical fact that women have been historically underrepresented as choreographers and directors in major ballet companies. In the last two years, women have made up only 27.4% of the choreographers commissioned by U.S. ballet companies. Connecticut Ballet has always valued the work of talented female creators,” Artistic Director Brett Raphael shares in an exclusive press release.
On Saturday, May 3, attendees will get to witness a world premiere by Hartford dancer and choreographer Jolet Creary, as well as rising choreographer Keerati Jinakunwiphat, the first Asian-American dance composer commissioned to work with New York City Ballet. Creary is a recipient of the Connecticut Office of the Arts Artistic Excellence Award and is currently the Artistic Director of Studio 860 as well as the founder of EQuilibrium Dance Theatre. In addition to Creary and Jinakunwiphat’s debuts, Inspiring Women will also feature a resurgence of Lila York's 1990 piece, Strays as well as The Open Road by Eve Chan, which is based on Walt Whitman’s eponymous poem. The evening will also include former Connecticut Ballet dancer Carlyn Hudson's 2022 clever work, A Piece That Might Never Happen About a Peace That Might Never Happen.
Inspiring Women will premiere on Saturday, May 3 at 7:00pm at The Bushnell and will return to stage on Saturday, May 10 at 7:30pm at The Palace in Stamford.
