CARNIVAL ON THE GREEN

AS THE SUN SET ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 3, THE SOUNDS OF A CARNIVAL ECHOED THROUGHOUT THE NEW HAVEN GREEN.

Complete with a carousel, prizes, and fried dough, the carnival ran concurrently with the third and final weekend of the Open Street festival on Church Street.

The final weekend was by far the busiest, with help from the carnival, and at one point, even brought the attendees of both events together to Cupid Shuffle with the help of DJ Too Much of the event series, WineDownCT.

The Green has served as a hallmark of the city of New Haven for over 380 years, marking one of the most iconic public spaces in the United States. Collective efforts to maintain the green haven’t gone unnoticed, with volunteer groups doing monthly cleanups of the space.

Organized by Angel Dahfay, the Green’s Manager of Program and Activation, both the carnival and festival were part of her countless ideas to activate the space and create a safe and welcoming environment for New Haven residents. Using her experience as an event curator, she’s bringing a level of enthusiasm and creativity to the role that makes all the difference.

In addition to her organization, the carnival was able to come together with the help of the Committee of the Proprietors of the Green and the city of New Haven’s economic development team. The New Haven Green has taken on a whole new life this summer.

With this being one of countless events set to take place in the heart of New Haven, it’s exciting to see just how many ways the space can be transformed in an effort to bring the city together.
