Nestled in the heart of Wooster Square, at 595 Chapel Street - just steps away from the park and New Haven’s world-famous pizza- lies Kaiyden’s - a coffee shop worth raving about.

Chidi Onukwugha’s love for coffee was born and nurtured in Nigeria. He recalled sharing his childhood table: “My father drank coffee, and we weren’t allowed to; he’d tell us that we had to be 13 so we could only drink tea with him, but I fell in love with the aroma; even when shopping for cologne, my favorite part was smelling the coffee beans in between the scents.”

Once he finally turned 13, coffee became a daily staple in his life. After 20 years of Starbucks loyalty and a fruitful career in social work, Onukwugha decided to pivot to business ownership. A true coffee lover appreciates the difference between a big chain shop and a latte made with love - he wanted to give that to his community.

When searching for a home for his business, he originally hoped to open a West African restaurant, and stumbled across this space - Shawna Onukwugha showed me photos of a then 5-year-old Kaiyden - smiling ear to ear in the venue. Blank walls void of color are a far cry from what this cafe has become - art fills the walls & a map with colorful pins representing their visitors from around the world - whimsy is as much of a fixture here as their famous Mocha.

The Cafe itself is a testament to his adoration for his now 10-year-old great-niece, after whom it was named. Kaiyden’s isn’t just a namesake; she rules the place with an iron fist, popping in with schoolmates on field trips and holding second-round interviews to make sure the place remains a family-friendly space as the cafe’s popularity grows.

Chidi and Shawna themselves are closely involved in the day-in and day-out operations of the cafe - always checking in with the customers they serve - looking for ways to enhance their experience. I had the pleasure of getting to know them during my visit, hearing about the cafe’s inception, and feeling the warmth the space exudes.

With a reading corner to exchange books and a snack bowl for pups, it’s clear that Kaiydens is a home for all. Chidi speaks openly about how much the community he’s served has helped his business thrive in the 5 years since its outset - from specific drink suggestions like the beet latte to a sneak peek at a potential logo design from a regular patron.

This place is more than worth the visit, and if this raving review wasn’t convincing enough, take a look at the almost 200 happy customers from around the world who felt compelled to leave a review on Google after their own experience.

Pay Kaiyden's a visit & keep up with them here!
