While many often find an artist’s creative process mystifying and maybe at times ludicrous, the audience is given an opportunity to see an earnest deconstruction of Kevin Hernández Rosa’s creative process – one which utilizes sensory exploration, and examinations of the self. Hernández Rosa states, “the studio for me is a space where I can teach myself about my boundaries in a safe way". In their studio, Hernández Rosa wears a hot-plate with a marching drum harness on their chest and lays down in the corner, freely sharing their thoughts as they arise. The moment provides an intimate look into their psyche, a psyche that explores playing as a healing practice; creation as an interrogation of the world. Later in the film, Hernández Rosa concludes, “I think I'm trying to see the world new all the time”.

Hernández Rosa grew up in Hartford’s Dutch Point Colony Housing Project, a public housing complex that has since been demolished and replaced with a mix of homeownership and rental units. They received their BFA from the Hartford Art School in 2016 and MFA from the Yale School of Art in 2021. Before they attended the University of Hartford, Hernandez Rosa participated in Eye on Video, a Neighborhood Studios apprenticeship program. It was at the program’s filming premiere where Hernandez Rosa and Bermúdez’s relationship first began to develop. On a phone conversation with Pedro Bermúdez, he shares that “[Kevin] is a person who shares my background on so many different levels… [they’re] an artist whose work I admire”. The mutual trust and appreciation for one another is the film’s bedrock, and will hopefully lead to more projects.
