Cafeteria Radio: #404day Featuring Acemo

Roland SYNTH+AIRA taps Acemo for a 30-min set on the industry standard SP-404.

The SYNTH+AIRA arm of Roland was made to create a focused lineup of products for the modern-day electronic musician. Commonly cited for dominating lo-fi hip-hop production, the SP-404 was first released in 2005 and has attracted beat makers, producers, and DJs of all genres.

The SP-404 saw a welcome return to the ‘pocket calculator’ style of the SP-303, with a more industrial look and four extra trigger pads. A warm, organic central light gave off a reassuring glow even when not in use and a total of 29 effects was onboard, including the DJ Looper. Initially a low-profile addition, the effect became a firm favorite and its ‘rapid repeat’ style can be heard in countless lo-fi hip hop jams. And because the top cover was removable, people quickly started customizing their 404’s with ‘skins’–a trend that continues to this day.

#404Day was coined to celebrate its impact on contemporary production and led Roland this year to book a handful of DJs/Producers from around the world and deliver a set with the device. It was our pleasure to host Acemo at The Caf again and share with you this set featuring all unreleased material.

Stay tuned for more radio shows as we have a solid lineup all month long.
